Amnesty International says that 80 countries worldwide have abolished capital punishment for all crimes.


Amnesty International says that 80 countries worldwide have abolished capital punishment for all crimes.

This stands in contrast to the global situation in 1977 when no other than 16 countries had taken this stand.

"There is essential element towards worldwide abolition," said Amnesty International Canadian Secretary General Alex Neve

In 2003 George Ryan, governor of llinois, commut the death dooms of 167 persons to life imprisonment. A similar action was taken by way of the president of Armenia. This year, Bhutan and Samoa have abolished capital punishment.

"But" said Neve "the ne for death penalty work continues."

Last year, 1146 folks were executed in 28 countries, and athwart 2000 were sentenced to death in 61 countries 84 by cent of all known executions took place in just four countries: China, Iran, Vietnam and the United States.
