Congratulations for printing the various views of learned scholars in succession the question of homosexuals and the Catholic ecclesiastical authority Gregory Baum asks, "Should homosexuals remain in the Catholic Church?" (CNT Jan 16 2005) I personally know a not many who have chosen not to. I understand and reverence their decision but it makes me sad. I miss them. I don't have any answers, unless I believe there is a end in pondering the questions. Has any question I wonder, ever been solv by dint of simply condemning it? Is it a natural part of God's creation that a certain percentage of animals, including the human animal, will be homosexual? Does that percentage increase as the population rises, as a sort of natural birth control? Are gays and lesbians gifted the public who need to be recognized and regarded with dignity? If I were the mother of a gay child, would I want him/her to find a partner with whom to live and be happy? Can heavenly-minded Mother church treat her children differently? Is chastity a grace bestowed from God on a few called to make that choice, or is it a cargo laid on those upon whom human authority imposes it?
When I ask Jesus about these matters I hear him say, "In my Father's house there are many rooms?" Are there enough compasss in our religious communities to accommodate all who be impressed called to join us? I do believe the solution to these and other questions must contain les condemnation and more unconditional be in love with Let us stay connected and allow the answers to be revealed by dint of the Spirit, who continues to elongate us beyond our comfortable, mental horizons.
It is important to have the courage of our convictions, however it is also important, to have the courage of our uncertainties. None of us has the final answer to each situation. Faith communities help us to reflect upon and to pray over the questions together.
